AVR gives a complete firmware only USB firmware called V-USB. Which give USB port to any AVR devices from TINY to MEGA. Many of the devices and sensors or peripherals uses RS232 or RS485. Interfacing these to PC or Laptop nowadays is very difficult. So USB conversion make life very much easy .

Here's the ATMEGAXXX based usb to uart and modbus converter. The jumper configuration will change the mode to output to either 232 level signal for 485 level signal.
